New charges filed in wake of car chase

A St. Martins man is facing additional charges in connection with a car chase with authorities earlier this month.
Matthew Mangus, 44, has been charged with DWI, resisting arrest, assault on a law officer, driving while revoked, possession of drug paraphernalia and careless and imprudent driving.
He had earlier been charged with first-degree tampering.
A Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement shows Mangus failed to stop at a stop sign at Jackson Street and East McCarty Street on July 16 and continued through the 300 block of Jackson Street before stopping for an officer in the 500 block of East High Street.
As the officer exited his vehicle and approached Mangus’ vehicle, Mangus sped away and the chase began.
At one point in the chase, Mangus put his vehicle into reverse near the intersection of Fairmount Boulevard and Chestnut Street and backed toward the police car, forcing the officer to maneuver to avoid a collision.
Mangus eventually crashed in the 6000 block of Rainbow Drive. A search of his vehicle found marijuana and small pipe.
The car had been taken from a relative who told authorities they had gotten into an argument after Mangus was told he could not borrow the vehicle. Mangus had a revoked drivers license at the time of the crash and was believed to be on his way to purchase drugs.
