Tornado-damaged Joplin schools on target to open

JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - Despite delays caused by the wet spring, three Joplin schools damaged or destroyed by the May 2011 tornado are on target to open as scheduled.

Three elementary schools are expected to meet a goal of opening in December. Superintendent C.J. Huff says the district is cautiously optimistic that the new high school will open in August 2014.

Mike Johnson director of construction for the school district, says wet spring weather caused the most delays at the high school, where construction is not as far along as at the three elementary schools.

The Joplin Globe reports (http://bit.ly/15oQI1J ) crews are also prepping for the construction of safe rooms - in the form of gymnasiums - at four other elementary schools and at Junge Field, the high school stadium.
