The Missouri River Regional Library board on Tuesday approved an MRRL Strategic Plan Outline setting a direction for the library to follow over the next three years.

The mission of the plan is to improve patron experience by enhancing e-collections at the library, strengthening MRRL's virtual presence and improving MRRL's physical experience.

Kathy Penfold, an MRRL board member, said she was worried the plan is vague and she didn't see any measurable benchmarks as a part of the plan.

Abbey Rimmel, a board member who is part of the planning committee that drafted the outline, said the plan tries to focus on a few things.

"We're trying to focus on a few things that we know we can do," she said.

The board voted to change the name of the document from the "MRRL Strategic Plan" to the "MRRL Strategic Plan Outline." Members also voted to add regular check-ins every few months so that the board's planning committee can discuss with MRRL Director Helen Rigdon how the plan is progressing.

In other action, the board was told:

• The MRRL Foundation raised nearly $2,800 from its annual letter campaign.

• The board's capital facilities committee has chosen the engineering firm Clark Enersen Partners in Kansas City to negotiate a study to look at the needs of the aging MRRL facility.

• A new director has been hired for the Osage County Library.

• MRRL staff are writing a proposal for a $330,000 project sponsored by MOREnet. The project would allow MRRL to test various technologies for MOREnet and then the library would present findings to other libraries.

• Courtney Waters, teen librarian, reported the largest turnout for the monthly Teen Lock-In in June. Sixty-eight teens attended the event.

• Due to loiterers in the library's park, staff will post signs that state the park closes at 9 p.m.
