A St. Martins man has been charged with first-degree tampering in connection with a chase that led authorities through Cole County, Tuesday.

A Cole County Sheriff's Department probable cause statement shows Matthew Mangus, 44, stole a vehicle from a family member.

Authorities were told Mangus wanted money due to a substance abuse problem and when he didn't get it he took the vehicle.

The family member did not report the incident until several hours after it occurred due to being in fear of Mangus.

Meanwhile, Mangus was involved in a vehicle pursuit with authorities, driving the stolen vehicle and ended up crashing when he couldn't negotiate a curve on Rainbow Drive, just west of Covered Wagon Road, around 6:42 p.m.
