Your Opinion: Thoughts on guns and abortion

Dear Editor:

In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, Conn. where a deranged gunman entered an elementary school and murdered 20 children ages 5-7 and six adults, the anti-gun advocates have been beating their chests and demanding more restrictions on guns and ammunition.

This school was a gun-free zone. There are plenty of laws currently on the books, and more laws will not do anything to change what happened in Newtown.

This madman did not pay any attention to the current laws, and if he were still alive would not heed any new gun restrictions.

The shooter at the theatre in Aurora, Colo. had seven area theaters to choose from. The reason he chose the one he did, it was the only one that displayed signs of being a gun-free zone. There were more gun-related deaths in gun-free Chicago last year than among coalition forces in Afghanistan.

The purpose of the Second Amendment is to secure our ability to oppose enemies foreign and domestic, a guarantee against disorder and tyranny. It is not really about Bambi and burglars.

George Washington once said: "A free people ought not only be armed and disciplined, but they should have sufficient arms and ammunition to maintain a status of independence from any who might attempt to abuse them, which would include their own government."

Now consider these anti-gun advocates and whether they are pro-life or pro-choice. My guess is the majority of them are pro-choice because most people on the left are pro-choice and anti-gun. Statistics show that there were about 60,000 gun-related deaths in the U.S. last year.

Compare that with more than 55.8 million abortions since Roe vs. Wade in 1973 and 6.3 million by Planned Parenthood since 1970. That's a lot of kids that will never reach the age of 5-7.

It's a shame these anti-gun advocates don't turn their outrage toward the abortion doctors and their medical instruments of death. To me there is no difference between a deranged madman with a gun and an abortion doctor with his instruments. The result is the same, the death of innocent human beings. Some may argue that it is a woman's right to have an abortion and that it is just a fetus. I say it is a child and the law agrees because people have been convicted of homicide for the death of a child still in the womb.

This is just some food for thought.
