NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Ilya Kovalchuk scored 4:39 into overtime, and the New Jersey Devils won their third straight game to start the lockout-shortened season, 3-2 over the winless Washington Capitals on Friday night.

Stephen Gionta and Patrik Elias scored for New Jersey, which is off to its first 3-0 start since the 2002-03 season, the last time the Devils won the Stanley Cup.

Mike Ribeiro and Mike Green scored for Washington in the final 7:15 of regulation to force overtime. The Capitals (0-3-1) became the last NHL team to earn a point this season.

Washington's Michal Neuvirth finished with 32 saves, stopping five shots after Green was called for interference in the opening minute of overtime.

Ribeiro had Washington's only shot against Martin Brodeur in the extra session, but it was a good one in close. Brodeur made 26 saves overall.

Under new coach Adam Oates, the Capitals are off to their worst start since dropping six straight in the 1993-94 season.

BRUINS 4, ISLANDERS 2

BOSTON (AP) - Zdeno Chara scored the tiebreaking goal early in the third period and Tuukka Rask made 24 saves, lifting Boston over the New York Islanders.

Patrice Bergeron, Shawn Thornton and Gregory Campbell also scored for Boston, which improved to 3-0-1.

New York's Keith Aucoin had his first career two-goal game, and has scored three times in two games.

Rick DiPietro, playing his first game since Dec. 3, 2011, after last season was cut short by a groin injury, made 23 saves for the Islanders.

New York (2-2) played the second of five straight on the road after rallying to beat Toronto 7-4 on Thursday.

JETS 4, PENGUINS 2

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) - Andrew Ladd scored the go-ahead goal in the second period and Winnipeg Jets won its first home game of the season, beating Pittsburgh.

Evander Kane, Dustin Byfuglien and Blake Wheeler, with a late empty-net goal, also scored for the Jets.

It didn't start well for Winnipeg after Sidney Crosby put on a scoring clinic in the first with two goals to give Pittsburgh a 2-0 lead.

But it was all Jets in the second. Kane scored early, Byfuglien tied it just over 10 minutes later, and Ladd then put the Jets ahead for good.

RED WINGS 5, WILD 3

DETROIT (AP) - Henrik Zetterberg snapped a tie midway through the second period, and Todd Bertuzzi scored his second goal of the game early in the third to lift Detroit over Minnesota.

Pavel Datsyuk, who assisted on Zetterberg's goal, put Detroit ahead by two late in the second period. Datsyuk also set up Bertuzzi on his second goal that gave the Red Wings a 5-2 lead.

Zach Parise's second goal of the game banked in off Zetterberg to pull the Wild within two midway through the third period.

Jimmy Howard made 23 saves for the Red Wings.

Minnesota's Josh Harding gave up four goals on 17 shots in the first two periods and finished with 22 saves. Tom Gilbert also scored for the Wild.

The Red Wings scored two power-play goals in the second period after failing the first 17 times they had an advantage over their first three-plus games this season.

Rookie Damien Brunner also scored for Detroit.

HURRICANES 3, SABRES 1

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - Jay Harrison scored the go-ahead goal with 4:50 left, helping Carolina beat Buffalo.

Harrison fired a slap shot from the right point after Eric Staal won the faceoff, and the puck beat goalie Ryan Miller on the short side.

Alexander Semin tied it for the Hurricanes early in the third period, and Jeff Skinner scored an empty-net goal for Carolina, which has won two straight. Dan Ellis made 40 saves in his first start for the Hurricanes.

Thomas Vanek scored for Buffalo (2-1), which has lost two in a row. Miller stopped 39 shots in his first loss of the season.

LIGHTNING 6, SENATORS 4

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Ryan Malone scored a pair of third-period goals, and Tampa Bay beat Ottawa.

Malone deflected Sami Salo's blue-line slap shot at 3:39 of the third that pulled the Lightning into a 4-4 tie. Tampa Bay then took the when Malone scored from the low left circle with 7:02 to play.

Tom Pyatt extended the lead to 6-4 with an empty-net goal. Tampa Bay (3-1) has outscored its opponents 11-1 in the third period this season.

Matt Carle, Steven Stamkos and Victor Hedman also scored for the Lightning, who started a five-game homestand.

Ottawa, which had a season-opening three-game winning streak end, got goals from Erik Condra, Jason Spezza, Erik Karlsson and Kyle Turris. Daniel Alfredsson, with two assists, has 45 assists and 68 points in 57 games against Tampa Bay.

The teams combined for five goals over the final 5 1/2 minutes of the second.

CANUCKS 5, DUCKS 0

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Cory Schneider made 30 saves in his fifth career shutout, Mason Raymond scored twice, and the Vancouver Canucks avenged last week's blowout loss to Anaheim with three power-play goals in a win over the Ducks.

Daniel Sedin and Raymond scored on power plays in the first period, and Zack Kassian added a man-advantage goal in the third period as the Canucks quieted Anaheim's standing-room-only crowd at the final home opener of the NHL's lockout-shortened season.

Jonas Hiller stopped 29 shots, but Anaheim couldn't get off to a 3-0-0 start for the second time in franchise history.
