Grand jury rips courthouse condition

The Cole County Commission is planning to put together requests for bids on several improvement projects at county facilities, including sealing the exterior of the county courthouse, a project that at one time was estimated to cost as much as $1 million.

This comes after commissioners were given a report Thursday from the county grand jury, which took a tour of the facility and gave their recommendations on what should be done.

The tour took place Nov. 28 at the request of Presiding Judge Pat Joyce, who in October had gone to commissioners with concerns about the condition of the building.

Maybe the county should add a one-cent sales tax to raise some money to fix the courthouse and take care of some things like paving some gravel roads.

What does a grand jury know about building conditions? Who cares what they think? Why do they get to make recommendations? Isn't there job just to hear evidence and determine if charges are filed in certain cases? Wow, self important much?

According to the article, state statute grants the grand jury the authority to make recommendations. Also according to the article, the grand jury was asked to do so by Judge Joyce.
