Holts Summit mother sentenced in child's death

The mother of a 9-month-old boy found dead in a Holts Summit mobile home in June 2012 will serve five years in prison after pleading guilty to felony charges in a Callaway County court.

According to court officials, Megan Ayres , 31, pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child endangerment and one count of possession of a controlled substance.

She was sentenced Wednesday.

According to Holts Summit police reports, an emergency call was received from 964 S. Summit Drive, lot 10.

The caller told the dispatcher there was a child who was blue and not breathing. The caller also stated the child was "beyond any help."

Emergency personnel from the Callaway County Ambulance District and the Holts Summit Fire Protection District arrived within minutes and found the 9-month-old dead in a playpen in the home.

There were red marks on the child's face on the right side near the upper cheek and around the right eye. There was also a red mark below the child's lower lip.

It was later determined the child had been deceased for "quite some time" by the time authorities had been called to the scene.

Another child, a 2-year-old girl, was also in the home at the time, but had no injuries when authorities came to the home.

Ayers said the boy was put to bed sometime between 10 and 11 p.m. Tuesday, June 19.

It was at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday, June 20, that the boy was found lying on his back, not breathing, and was blue.

During further questioning, Ayers admitted to using methamphetamines the day before the baby was found dead.

Investigators removed several needles, a baggy containing a white powdery substance, a baggy containing a brown powdery substance and other items from the residence.

Courts do not value the lives of children very highly. It is rare that a child-killer gets more than 5 years or so. Pay attention- you will notice this practice as well.

If the child-killer had a 1/4 pound of grass in their pocket, they would have gotten 10-15 years.

It's called a plea-deal. We don't have privvy to access all of the details. The prosecutor would've straight away gone for the max of anything s/he felt confident in proving. On that you can be assured. Some of them, like Hulsof, would've likely blurred the lines of what was proof.

Y'all are a reason why people deal instead of going to jury--because you want to enact your own justice rather than read the whole casefile.

You're working to determine whether there is a reasonable doubt. That's it.

Sheesh.

I can only pray one of you "innocents" enjoys the opportunity of learning the hard way--the Pros. always goes for the throat, if they think they can get it...or get away with it.

Was it ever released what the cause of death was? None of the articles I have read have made it clear, was the child beaten, ingest drugs? What happened?

Lifer, there is nothing in this article that says the person "killed" the child. She left the child alone for about 12 hours, and the child died during that time. Let's reign it in.

The Justice System definitely does not value the lives of children. People who torture, beat, rape, and murder children only get a fraction of what many non-violent offenders get. You can commit fraud on someone's bank account or credit card and get 5 years, you can get 5 years for marijuana possession, heck you can get 5 years for driving without a license too many times. If she wasn't charged with the possession of a controlled substance as well she would have probably gotten probation.

Just read some of the comments defending the mother of the two year old found wandering the streets at 2AM on the other article. No matter how suspicious something looks or feels there is always a small army of those willing to weave a sob story about how it is justifiable. If you don't buy the story or question the holes your branded a right wing zealot attempting to tell someone how to live.

cases involving the death of neglected children are hard to prove as there is usually no witness and only a "grieving" mother and her story with a solid Liberal/Feminist defensive wall.

And another article tells about a young man that got 4 years for vandalizing a patrol car. Fair sentencing? Very sad.
