Your Opinion: Gun crimes and our sense of security

Dear Editor:

We Americans have suffered another blow to our sense of security because of the recent murder of 20 children by a mental patient. Several other disturbing gun crimes have been committed by mental patients within living memory. Some people are saying that we should keep guns away from all mental patients.

I wonder if we can think of any subgroup of our population with an even greater tendency to commit gun crimes. If we can identify such an element, then I think that we should disarm its members immediately.

Of course, if that element is much more politically powerful than are mental patients, then disarming it won’t be possible.

We can still ease the angst that we feel at losing control of our country by moving against citizens who can’t fight back effectively.
