City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus said Schlueter died of a sudden heart attack Monday in his Arizona home. Schlueter had retired Sept. 28 and began a consulting contract with the city Oct. 1 that was supposed to run through March 29.

Schlueter, 67 and a Jefferson City native, had spent 13 years as finance director with the city. Mayor Eric Struemph said he was excellent at his job, earning the city a certificate of achievement for excellence in financial reporting every year.
