Hosier murder trial postponed

Court unable to seat jury in Clay County

The trial of a Jefferson City man accused of killing a couple in September 2009 will not take place this week.

After two days of trying to select a jury in Clay County, it was determined that there needed to be more than 125 people in the jury pool for the trial of David Hosier, 57.

Hosier is charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, first-degree burglary and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with the deaths of Rodney and Angela Gilpin, who were killed with multiple gunshot wounds.

Cole County Prosecutor Mark Richardson said they thought 125 potential jurors would be enough. But after granting hardship requests and other motions to strike jurors for various reasons, there weren't enough qualified jurors left to hear the case.

Now that this has happened, Cole County Presiding Judge Pat Joyce has granted a motion from Hosier's lawyer, public defender Donald Catlett, to have the jury be selected from another county.

The case will still be heard in Cole County, so the jury will be brought here.

A hearing in Joyce's chambers to determine where the jury will be picked and when the trial will take place is scheduled for Friday.
