Strong feelings on both sides of St. Louis area Wal-Mart project

SHREWSBURY, Mo. (AP) — The Tax Increment Financing Commission of a St. Louis County town is opposing $15 million in subsidies for a planned Wal-Mart Super Center, but the project might still get the go-ahead.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch (http://bit.ly/VRX4S6 ) reports the issue is generating strong feelings in Shrewsbury, where more than 200 people attended a commission meeting Wednesday night. Though the commission denied a recommendation for the subsidies, the Board of Aldermen will ultimately have final say, and many expect the board to override the commission.

Developers want to build the new Wal-Mart at the site of an abandoned movie theater on Watson Road. Critics oppose tax breaks to the world’s largest retailer. But supporters fear the loss of the project would further deplete services in the cash-strapped community.

Corporate welfare for a corporation that pays slaves wages that makes their employees eligible for food stamps...........

Sounds like a great idea.

Explain slave wages. Then after you discover that slave wages = minimum wage (laws set up by Donks & Repubs alike), explain why a pregnant 17 year old with zero skills (complaining how she got a call at home from her employer offering her more hours which she refused true story) should get paid more than minimum wage. You want to stay off food stamps? Pay attention in school, graduate with good grades, get some sort of technical or 4 year degree and look beyond Walmart. Otherwise, it's a job that pays the level of your experience which is zero in most cases. If anything, Walmart is hiring you even though you have a tattoo on your face and giving you a chance to gain skills which is more than you started with...it is a great idea. How much do you pay your cashiers?

I had thought my previous post was self explanatory, but I will do state it again......

Slave wages are wages for a full time job that make someone elligible for food stamps. I am not referring to wages for part time teenagers. I am talking about full grown adults with a family to support. As for the scenarios that you describe, your true story about the 17 year-old is just one person of the multitude of workers of Wal-Mart. I have never seen a worker at Wal-Mart with a tattoo on their face. Then again, I rarely shop at Mall-Wart because they are an evil corporation that has destroyed Main Street USA. Downtown Jefferson City is a prime example of how Mall-Wart has closed so many mom and pop shops.

The original intent of my post was to state subsidizing Wal-Mart is wrong. It amounts to corporate welfare for a corporation that does not need the money.

I know several people who work for Walmart and make more than min wage and receive medical benefits, so I don't understand all this about slave wages. Also, several areas receive subsidies, such as farming, gas, electric and many, many more; so you should check into the facts b4 you talk about welfare. Actually CORPORATE Welfare is larger than any other subsidy, however it is called a subsidy instead of welafare. Now should we help the average person or companies?????
