Your Opinion: Dismaying response to gun violence
Wednesday, January 9, 2013
To say it’s not the right time to discuss gun control and to accuse others of using another incident of mass murder with firearms “to further their political agenda” is, to me, simply unethical. I’m flabbergasted and dismayed at that attitude and the fact that so many consider arming even more people with guns to be the answer to gun violence.
The violence in our society is a complex issue for which some measures of gun control are part of the solution. Affordability and ease of access to mental health treatment is another piece. And there’s more to it.
Solutions to this difficult set of problems require people of great intelligence, wisdom and compassion. We’re fortunate to have a president with those qualities. Solutions will come from people in office whose “political agenda” is the public good and not merely their own self-interest.
There must be moderate Republican politicians who consider the public good part of their agenda. I hope these Republicans have the courage and integrity to work with President Obama in solving the issue of gun violence that has lead to so many lives cut short, to so much loss and grief.
