Deadline nears for conference center proposal

City has not received any proposals

The deadline for proposals for a new Jefferson City conference center is drawing near, and no proposals have been submitted yet.

City Administrator Nathan Nickolaus said it’s common to receive responses only in the last few days before the deadline, which is set for Jan. 31. The concept calls for a hotelier-owned facility with no city-provided operations subsidy.

Many residents don't want it. No one seems to want to build it. Maybe ought to put this adventure to rest.

The problem is that they have scaled it down so small that it really isn't any better than what we already have. It won't attract large groups or really change much of anything, except probably put one of the existing hotels/confernce centers out of business (my guess Truman Hotel). The other problem is that the convention center that is being proposed really won't benefit any of the residents other than the caterers and maybe attract a few folks who might buy some overpriced nic nacs from the uptown stores that might be open in the evenings after the convention meetings.

What this town really needs is a large convention center / community center that can be very reconfigurable for various events like car shows, indoor rodeo, concerts to seat 5,000, gun shows, recreational sports, theater, etc. to serve local residents as well as attract tourists. It needs to be able to accomodate conventions of up to 2,000 people with a common meeting room and several breakout rooms. This would help our town grow and actually provide some benefits to all.

If we keep doing the same thing, we will keep getting the same results. Time to stretch and think long term and bigger.

I would like to see a convention center...but I agree with the above post...it has to be large enough to accomdate big events. Lets either decide to do this right or not at all. To go with a much smaller venue will only give us the same issues we already face, which is not enough to attract first class events.

I to agree JC LIFER, we need to have a draw to Jefferson City, starting in the spring through the fall all those cars from Iowa are not coming to JC; They are going to a destination an hour, or less south? Jefferson city missed the boat on this one! If we want more than a one horse town, we need a comprehensive plan to bring those cars from St Louis, IL. IO. and beyond to stop here instead of going straight through? We might even get some of those Legislators help us get the venue we deserve. Rob
