International attention for dragged dog

ST. LOUIS (AP) — A pit bull puppy that survived being dragged down a St. Louis interstate is drawing international attention.

KSDK-TV (http://on.ksdk.com/TYHVlX ) reports the Humane Society of Missouri has received at least 1,000 inquiries from people seeking to adopt the dog.

Rescuers have dubbed him Trooper, and he’s getting cards and treats from as far away as Afghanistan and Australia. His Facebook page has more than 12,000 followers.

Officials believe a 41-year-old woman tried to return Trooper to her ex-husband by having her 13-year-old son tie the puppy to a pickup truck on Nov. 20. The pickup driver didn’t see the puppy and began driving down Interstate 55. The woman faces misdemeanor charges.

The Humane Society says Trooper is still healing and won’t be available for adoption for four to six weeks.

There are tons of articles about pit bull attacks; enough so that people are inordinately afraid of them. I do not now, nor have I ever owned a pit but I do think they're great dogs. My brother has had them for years and because his are raised in loving, family homes, they're wonderful pets and I've never had a worry about my kids being around them. Any dog can attack if provoked. There are very basic "rules" for having children around dogs. Unfortunately, too many parents let their kids pull ears, poke, jump on or otherwise torment dogs because they think it's "cute" then want to cry foul when the dog bites.

Statistics tell us to be afraid, articles just highlight the statistics. Your anomaly with pit bulls is just that, an anomaly. Perhaps, the dog owner should have basic "rules" about their intolerant, bite prone animal being around kids. I agree with teaching kids "rules" with handling any animal, but the ultimate responsibility lies with the mongrel owner, rules or no rules.
