Charges filed in JC shooting case
Wednesday, January 2, 2013
Charges were filed Wednesday in connection with a shooting on New Year's Day in Jefferson City.
Those charged included:
• Byron Betts, 29, Jefferson City, charged with armed criminal action and unlawful possession of a firearm.
• Brandon Betts, 29, Jefferson City, charged with possession with intent to distribute a controlled substance.
• Daleron Monroe, 26, Columbia, charged with first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statements show Monroe was the shooter and Brandon was the victim of the assault which occurred just before 5 a.m. at Phillips 66, 807 Stadium Boulevard.
Witnesses identified Monroe as the shooter and that he used a “Glock” type 9 mm firearm.
Store video backed up what the witnesses told police.
It showed Monroe firing a weapon and Brandon being struck in the face.
Later it was discovered that Monroe and Brandon knew each other from prior incidents.
Police did report that it was believed the initial confrontation began at Club Motivation on Industrial Drive, but that nothing illegal occurred until the shooting at the convenience store.
Brandon was taken to Capital Region Medical Center by his brother, Byron, and later transferred to University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia where he was treated and released.
While being treated, Brandon’s clothes were examined and over $2,100 in cash was found in his pants pockets, along with 12 grams of marijuana.
Brandon told investigators that the marijuana was his and he was in possession of it prior to being shot.
A search of Brandon’s vehicle turned up an unopened box of zip lock bags, which is commonly used for narcotics distribution.
Byron’s probable cause statement shows he fled Capital Region after dropping his brother off to be treated, but he was eventually arrested.
He and Brandon were being fired upon next to the gas pumps at the convenience store.
Store video shows Byron fired a handgun at least two times back at Monroe and it was during the exchange that Brandon was hit.

Maybe if they move Club Motivation to a nicer part of town the vagrants will start getting along. How about where Hollywood's used to be? That was such a fine establishment with decent patrons never causing any trouble...with the exception of random shootings, it was nice place to hang out and relax.

Why doe's this club keep coming up? The City Council needs to take the matter of Club Motivation up, once and for all? How many stories start at the Motivation? People need to go to jail for illegal gun use? A responcible business would call the police when they have a problem, at the Motivation it seems like they do a good job of taking care of their own, but dump it on the streets of Jefferson City! There is a reason why the employees are strapped there? Rob

Brandon Betts was shot by a third party. Family life for the Betts' is not impacted. Hollywood's and the Corner Pocket are both gone. Club motivation handles their own, and that's all that matters. The Salvation Army apparently has no role in this shooting, donate.

I was in awe of the very smart peson who blamed this on the Salvation Army the other day. So does that mean the shoe store should be to blame to because thats where they get the shoes they have on their feet. I hope that person reads this and feels as dumb as they sound.

A big win for JCPD for charging the VICTIM before finding the SUSPECT. This place is a bad comedy show and needs to be canceled.

See the first comment on the original story - I called it like a 20-time rerun on tv - how many times do we have to put up with this stuff that starts at Motivation and ends up down on Stadium or in general, the streets of Jefferson City??

Just another reason it is important to conceal and carry in this town. We all have to take responsibility for our personal protection. We can no longer rely on the governent to keep us safe. The deadly violence in Jefferson City is becoming a common occurance. No plans or initiatives have been found that will curtail these thugs. The residents are left to defend themselves. Much of the violence starts in the schools. JCHS is not the school we attended, nor the one our parents attended. Things are really bad there.
When seconds count, the police are minutes away.

Wait, I thought this incident involved the thugs shooting each other? How would CC have affected the outcome of this? BOTH parties had guns. Isn't that what you propose with CC? If having a gun is supposed to keep thugs from shooting at you (for fear of you having a gun and shooting back), then why did this incident even happen? Shouldn't they have BOTH been scared?

They can shoot each other all day if they want. I don't want them shooting at me or other innocent bystanders.

People's ignorance astounds me! Midmoguy89, is it your true belief that the Betts shouldn't have been charged since one was injured while engaging in illegal activity? There was a fire fight on tape and the police had evidence from a previous incident. By all means, let's fail to charge them for their criminal activity due to injury. Let's only charge one of the gun handlers because he had better aim... Your biased comments due to your obvious distain for officers of the law should be canceled :)

Oh he should have absolutley been charged. I just find it hilarious that instead of working on one thing they decide to go a different way. My best friend is a former police officer and I almost became one. Your assumptions are ignorant, not my comment.

First, I would like to state that I really dislike this 'corner'. I don't say 'hate' because that puts too much emotion behind it, and I really don't have that kind of energy. Secondly, I would like to say that there are some really good people who go to that store. Not everyone who goes there is looking for drugs or a fight. Just most, lol. No, really. There are some very nice and kind people who are regulars at that store. Everyday is not the same old 'oh, someone got shot...again', that is a rare occurance that maybe happens twice a year. The JCPD could perhaps respond quicker, but that is partially our fault for not voting for better funding. Another is the fact that they are just as sick, I imagine, of the stupid stuff as the cashiers are. -ACC

JCPD does not need more funding. What they need is to disband the Traffic (speed traps and parking tickets) Division and create a Violent Crime Division instead. While the thugs are having firefights in the streets over drug deals, the police are busy ensuring no one drives over 40mph on the four lane EXPRESSWAY.
