Lincoln receives 31 all-region awards in track

The Lincoln track and field teams had 18 members receive a combined 31 all-region honors from the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association recently.

The Lincoln women, currently ranked No. 1 in the country in the latest USTFCCCA Division II rankings, had 13 athletes combine for 22 honors, while the men’s team had five athletes selected in a total of nine events.

To be named all-region, athletes must be in the top five in their region in individual events and among the top three in their region in relay events.

Sheri Kaye Campbell, the high point scorer at the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Indoor Championships, and Donna-Lee Hylton led Lincoln with three all-region honors apiece.

Campbell, who helped lead Lincoln to the MIAA championship last weekend, earned honors in the high jump, triple jump and pentathlon. Hylton, meanwhile, was honored for her efforts in the 200- and 400-meter runs and the 4x400-meter relay.

Five members of the women’s team were all-region status in two events, including Latoya King, who owns the nation’s top times in the 60-meter (7.37) and the 200-meter (23.70) dashes.

Lincoln’s 4x400-meter squad, consisting of Hylton, Yanique Haye, Tamara Keane and Michelle Cumberbatch, also owns the top time in the country (3:40.55), and all four athletes also earned all-region honors in individual events. Haye and Cumberbatch were honored in the 400-meter dash, while Keane was named all-region in the 200-meter dash.

Yanique Ellington picked up all-region honors in the 60-meter and 200-meter events, while Anna-Kay James and Juneille Barker were both recognized in the 60-meter hurdles.

Twishana Williams (one-mile run), Lovan Palmer (400-meter dash), Nickeisha Beaumont (long jump) and Daniele Newman (triple jump) were also honored.

On the men’s side, four of the five honored athletes earned all-region recognition in multiple events, including Romel Lewis, who was selected in both the 60- and 200-meter dashes.

Sabiel Anderson was honored in the 60-meter hurdles, Michael Ashley was recognized in the 400-meter dash and Jermaine Blake was selected in the 800-meter run.

Anderson, Ashley, Blake and Tyrone Hawkins were honored in the 4x400-meter relay.

Lincoln will have 13 members from the women’s team and six from the men’s team will represent the Blue Tigers in a combined 27 events at the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships, which will be held Thursday through March 9 in Birmingham, Ala.
