Snow impacts services at shelters, hospitals
Wednesday, February 27, 2013
Because of snow, Tuesday played out a lot like last Thursday for many social service agencies in the Jefferson City area.
All of St. Mary’s Health Center’s clinics were closed Tuesday, as well as all Jefferson City Medical Group practices and clinics.
Most of Capital Region Medical Center’s clinics were closed, but a few in outlying cities such as Versailles were able to remain open. CRMC’s Urgent Care was able to open at 8 a.m., and the hospital, emergency department, Goldschmidt Cancer Center and the Sam B. Cook Healthplex were also open.
Amy Berendzen, director of marketing and public relations at CRMC, said the emergency room saw a trend of patients who had fallen because of the snow, resulting in orthopedic injuries.
The Salvation Army’s Center for Hope emergency shelter saw a decreased need in its services.
Al Decosta, the shelter’s lead monitor, said the shelter had a few people for lunch Tuesday, but he thinks the snow made it less busy.
“We expect more people after the snow stops,” Decosta said Tuesday afternoon. “We’ll keep on serving as we can. We’re still serving meals and still have cold weather cots.”
Phillip Iman, disaster specialist with the American Red Cross Heart of Missouri chapter, said chapter volunteers are on standby in case their services are needed.
“We’re trying to be as proactive as we can be and so are our county emergency teams, especially in Boone and Cooper counties, in case the power doesn’t come back on,” Iman said.
The chapter deployed one staff member to the State Emergency Operations Center on Militia Drive on Tuesday morning.
Missouri River Regional Library was closed Tuesday, but wanted to remind patrons that even when the library is closed, e-books and e-audiobooks are available for checkout online.
The Samaritan Center was also closed Tuesday.
Marylyn DeFeo, the agency’s volunteer executive director, said as long as Jefferson City Public Schools are closed, the Samaritan Center is closed.
The Jefferson City Area YMCA opened at 3 p.m. Tuesday, but all classes and programs were canceled for the evening.
As of Tuesday night, all of the mentioned agencies had plans of normal operating hours today.
