MU softball tops Florida

PALM SPRINGS, Calif. — The Missouri softball team got its first taste of the Southeastern Conference and remained unbeaten Friday night.
Nicole Hudson hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift seventh-ranked Missouri to a 4-3 victory against No. 5 Florida in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.
Florida (15-1) took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 11th on an error before Missouri responded.
The Tigers (8-0) tied the game on a sacrifice fly by Emily Crane and won the game on Hudson’s single in the 12th.
Chelsea Thomas improved to 4-0 on the season. She allowed three runs (zero earned) on five hits. She struck out 19 batters.
The game does not count in the conference standings.
The Tigers are back in action today with a doubleheader against Cal State Fullerton beginning at 4 p.m.
The Tigers opened the Classic with a pair of wins Thursday. Missouri defeated Maryland 13-1 in five innings thanks to a nine-run second inning.
Missouri led 5-0 when Kelsea Roth cleared the bases with her second career grand slam.
The Tigers then added three more in the third and a run in the fourth.
Missouri had just six hits as Maryland (3-3) walked 12 batters.
Thomas pitched two innings to get the victory.
It was pitching that got Missouri past San Diego State in Thursday’s second game. Bailey Erwin allowed four hits and one run in seven innings as the Tigers outlasted the Aztecs 2-1.
San Diego State (6-5) took a 1-0 lead with a run in the fourth. But Missouri bounced back with two in the fifth on Jenna Marsten’s two-run double.
Erwin took care of the rest as she finished with a career-high nine strikeouts, including three in the seventh.
Missouri finished with four hits and no Tiger had more than one.
