Tough loss for Missouri baseball

At Southern Miss

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The Missouri baseball team led No. 23 Southern Mississippi 1-0 after seven innings, but watched it all fall apart in a 6-1 loss to the Golden Eagles on Sunday.

Jace James was impressive on the hill, as he pitched five scoreless innings in first career start for the Tigers. He gave up just three hits, didn’t walk a batter and struck out one.

But the Tigers were hampered by the fact they got outhit 9-3 in the loss. After outhitting Southern Mississippi in the season opener Friday, Missouri was limited to nine hits over the final two games of the series.

Missouri got the game’s first run in the top of the sixth when a fielder’s choice by Dane Opel plated Sal Belfonte.

Jake Walsh followed James and worked two scoreless innings, giving up just one hit.

But the Golden Eagles got to John Miles in the eighth, scoring two earned runs on two hits.

Keaton Steele followed, but he gave up four more earned runs on three hits and two walks as Southern Mississippi ended up with a six-run inning.

Missouri (0-3) will travel to Memphis this weekend for a three-game series.
