Your Opinion: Democrats must stop stalling on budget
Friday, February 15, 2013
Obama is once again willing to do anything to prevent spending cuts. He, and the Democrat-controlled Senate, have had since August 2011 to come up with a budget plan to avoid sequestration. I don’t think Harry Reid has even allowed the Senate to vote on a budget during that time. Obama now wants to “kick the can down the road” once again. Democrats won’t be happy until they control every cent of every person’s income.
Obama said, “There is no reason, no reason for that (sequestration) to happen.” One reason is that the Democrats won’t even vote on a budget.
Obama said, “Putting our fiscal house in order calls for a balanced approach, not massive, indiscriminate cuts that could have a severe impact on our military preparedness.” The military cuts total $470 billion over 10 years. The war in Iraq cost us over $100 billion a year. We are supposedly winding down the war in Afghanistan. We should expect twice this amount of cuts in military spending over the next 10 years.
“Sequester is a blunt and indiscriminate instrument that poses a serious threat to our national security, domestic priorities and the economy,” Danny Werfel, a senior official at the White House budget office, told reporters at a briefing. “It does not represent a responsible way to achieve deficit reduction,” he said. Werfel needs to tell his boss to force the Democrat-controlled Senate to pass some type of budget. At that point negotiations with the House could at least begin.
Under Obama the feds are spending over a trillion dollars a year more than was spent during the Bush presidency. Under Obama the feds are spending over twice as much per year as they spent during the Clinton presidency. If the feds rolled back spending to what it was during the Clinton presidency we would have a budget surplus, without more tax increases. How many of you couldn’t live if the level of government assistance was cut back to Clinton-era levels? The politicians in Washington will never willingly reduce spending to responsible levels. As long as well allow the federal government to usurp more of our rights they will continue to do so.
