Missouri softball sweeps

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The Missouri softball team pounded out eight home runs, including three apiece by Nicole Hudson and Kelsea Roth, while starting the season with two wins Friday at the UC Santa Barbara Gaucho Classic.

The Tigers hit five of those home runs in their season opener, an 11-3 win over the host school, matching the school record for homers in a game.

In that game, Hudson went 3-for-3, including a pair of homers, while Angela Randazzo, Roth and Rachel Hay adding long balls. Randazzo finished 2-for-2 in the game, also smacking a double.

Bailey Erwin picked up the win in the circle, pitching all five innings. She had three strikeouts while allowing eight hits and three earned runs.

Missouri is now 29-8 all-time in season openers.

The Tigers kept the hitting up into the second game, powering to a 4-0 victory over Fresno State.

Missouri outhit the Bulldogs just 6-2, but Roth hit her second and third home runs and Hudson added her third.

That was more than enough support for two-time all-American pitcher Chelsea Thomas, who threw a complete game and struck out nine.

The Tigers continue the Classic today with a 1:15 p.m. matchup with Fresno State, followed by a 1 p.m. contest against San Diego at 1 p.m.

Missouri’s final game in the event is set for 11 a.m. Sunday against UC Santa Barbara.
