McGurk leaving JCHS

Jefferson City High School activities director Mike McGurk said Thursday he is leaving his post to take a similar position at Lee's Summit North High School.

He will assume the role of activities director and assistant principal in July provided the JCHS board approved his resignation during a meeting late Thursday night.

McGurk, who has been at Jefferson City High School since relocating from Virginia in 2008, cited family reasons for the change. He will stay with Jefferson City through the end of the school year.

McGurk's wife is originally from Lee's Summit and still has family in the area. Their son also plays on a youth hockey team in Kansas City, making travel to practices and games much easier.

He also cited the school districts academics, calling it "top level."

"Those type of jobs don't come open very often," McGurk said.

He was offered the job Wednesday and informed Jefferson City administrators later in the day.

During his time at Jefferson City, McGurk said he is most proud of the athletic department becoming more cohesive as a unit. He said coaches are more supportive of other sports than they were in the past.

Jefferson City added activities during McGurk's tenure, such as the dance team. He also cited the cooperative work of coaches and administrators to put in place a drug testing program for athletes.

"We enjoyed our time in Jefferson City," McGurk said.
