Holts Summit agrees to extend sidewalk project

The Holts Summit Board of Aldermen gave final approval Monday to an ordinance accepting a $290,000 federal grant to build a sidewalk and a crosswalk with electric signals along West Simon Boulevard in Holts Summit.
City Administrator Brian Crane said the 80-20 federal grant requires the city of Holts Summit to pay about $72,000 of the project costing $360,000.
The project would extend the current sidewalk an additional 800 feet along the north side of West Simon Boulevard from The Print Shop eastward to North Summit Drive.
A crosswalk with electric “walk-don’t walk” signals will extend the sidewalk south across West Simon Boulevard to connect with the newly completed 1,100-foot sidewalk along the west side of South Summit Drive from North Elementary School northward, ending at the intersection of South Summit Drive and West Simon Boulevard.
The West Simon Boulevard sidewalk will connect with the existing sidewalk starting at The Print Shop extending past Moser’s Grocery westward to Greenway Drive.
Crane said the city plans to extend the sidewalk northward from that point sometime in the future to nearby subdivisions that already have sidewalks.
“This means youngsters would have a sidewalk all the way from their subdivision to the school,” Crane said. He said the city also would like eventually to extend sidewalks from residential areas along North Summit Drive to connect with South Summit Drive that already has sidewalks to North School.
The ordinance approved Monday night authorizes the mayor to enter into a contract with the Missouri Highway and Transportation Department to build the $360,000 West Simon Boulevard project.
Crane said the latest sidewalk extension project means the city of Holts Summit has received $1.3 million in federal grants since 2007 and cost the city only about $200,000 for its share of the work.
The project will be planned this summer and construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2014.
Crane also said attorneys representing the city of Holts Summit and the YMCA of Callaway County are working on a proposed contract between the two entities that would permit construction of a new $475,000 YMCA complex that would include renovations of the current Civic Center at Holts Summit in Greenway Park and a new 6,000-square-foot YMCA exercise facility.

This really bugs me! What Holt Summit NEEDS is an on and off ramp on the otherside of the overpass to summit drive. I lived a minute down that road for three years. When I needed gas, cigs, food, movies, or whatever, I drove to Jeff cause otherwise I would have to drive 30 mph down summit drive till I finally get to a shop of any use. ALWAYS GO 30 MPH, CAUSE THE COPS HERE ARE JACKS! Do you have any idea how much money holts summit would rank in if they would allow people back onto summit drive from the highway. People would go into holts summit for their daily needs instead of Jefferson City, which in turn GIVES HOLTS SUMMIT MORE MONEY IN TAX DOLLARS TO THEN LATER DO THIS SIDEWALK THING. Sidewalk, I mean really! How many people walk compared to the amount of angry drivers who can't take their exit cause there isn't one! Got to go all they way past Columbia's on ramp just to turn around and go back.
If your confused, just go drive to holts summits third exit and turn around. Now try to get onto summit drive going towards the bridge....
That winery is opening soon if it hasn't already... If the owner wants more business, holts summit needs to offer easier ways to get to the winery, aka on and off ramps on the other side of the overpass! This wouldn't be that hard, and it would bring business to holts summit!
Which I'd say that winery would be somewhat of a big portion of holts summits taxes... Why are you not trying to please your biggest customer holts summit?
I avoided any type of sale in holts summit cause they don't deserve the taxes if they won't do something for the people living there... Jefferson City try's really hard to give you access to anywhere and everywhere! Holts summit needs to learn if they want to grow or make more money.....
Sad thing when an on and off ramp is whats stopping your town from getting extra business!

Place the blame where it belongs. The interchange you talk about is not in Holts Summit (actually closer to Jefferson City) but belongs to the State of Missouri and controlled by the Highway and Transportation Department. They are the ones you need to complain to if you want the ramps. In addition, most of the old highway is in the county and they are the ones who enforce the speed limit down by the winery. As far as the 30 mile-per-hour speed limit, it is the same as Jefferson City's speed limit. In addition, I would rather have people walking on the sidewalk instead of dodging the big trucks going to and from the quarry.

Now that I'm aware, thank you.
I just couldn't justify driving in holts summit at 30 mph to the last exit, spend money in that town and drive all they way back home when I'm being limited to what I can get in holts summit anyways.
I do withdraw my rudeness now that I'm aware that it isn't holts summits fault.

I beg to differ, how long have Holts Summit residents begged for that option? How long have Callaway county residents begged for that option? You would think that someone would have petitioned the revered CAMPO for money to put those in. I am sure the previous owner of the winery would have loved the option of ramps.
To some extent it is Holts Summit's fault. They should have been more concerned about growth than seeing their feuding ways plastered all over the media a few years ago.

MoDot got the J Turn theory down, just look at Cole and Boone county! That interchange is extremly difficult back to the early 80s when Mo Dot first opened it! Rob
