Locals wrestle at MIAA Tournament

EDMOND, Okla. - Three area wrestlers competed in Sunday's Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association Wrestling Tournament hosted by the University of Central Oklahoma.

With just six MIAA schools fielding teams, the bracket for each weight class consisted of just six wrestlers, enabling the entire championships to be completed in one day.

Nebraska-Kearney emerged as the champion, racking up 109 points to beat the host school by seven points.

They were followed by Central Missouri (47), Fort Hays State (42), Lindenwood (21) and Truman State (12).

The best finish for the area competitors came from Central Missouri's Hunter Neighbors (Jefferson City High School), who took fourth in the 133-pound bracket.

Neighbors started out with a win by fall in 1:24 over Truman's Dan Karlskin. In the semifinals, Neighbors dropped a 9-1 decision to Central Oklahoma's Casy Rowell, the third-ranked wrestler at 133 pounds in Division II.

Neighbors then won his first consolation round match by pin over Lindenwood's Michael Caldwell in 5:42 before falling 2-1 to Fort Hays State's Rory Wilkinson in the third-place match.

At 141 pounds, Truman State's Nick Shea (Helias) lost to eventual champion Trison Graham of Central Oklahoma by a 20-9 score in the first round. Shea then had a bye before being eliminated with an 8-1 loss to Brock Coutu of Nebraska Kearney.

At 165, Ty Loethen (Helias High School) received a first-round bye in before losing 8-3 to Central Oklahoma's Chris Watson. Loethen then lost by fall to Dustin McClintock of Truman State to get eliminated.
