JC man charged with burglary

A Jefferson City man has been charged with breaking into a Cole County home on Jan. 28 and using stolen checks to try to purchase items.

Andrew Hopkins, 18, of 909 Harding St., is charged with second-degree burglary and forgery.

A Cole County Sheriff’s Department probable cause statement shows the burglary occurred in the 3900 block of Oakdale Road.

The homeowner said the back door was pried open and several pieces of jewelry, $1,000 and a book of checks were stolen.

After the break-in, some of the stolen checks were reportedly being cashed at both Jefferson City Walmarts.

One of the checks was declined by a cashier due to the name on the driver’s license not matching the name on the check.

Video surveillance showed Hopkins was using the checks.

Hopkins was taken into custody and admitted he was involved in the burglary. He also admitted to kicking in doors on several houses in the county the past two weeks.

A search of Hopkins’ residence found jewelry taken in the Oakdale burglary.
