Authorities detail collection scam

The Callaway County Sheriff’s Department is investigating a scam in the county.

According to sheriff’s reports, victims have been getting calls from individuals saying they work for Martinez and Associates and give an address of 11 E. 11th St. in Lawrence, Kan.

During the phone call, the person will tell the victim there is a lawsuit against their Social Security number and may give the victim the last four digits of their number and request a payment.

They further tell the victim that if they fail to pay they are subject to arrest.

One victim told the sheriff’s department that after he forwarded money to this company he received a phone call that showed a local number.

This is the exact reason why I will NOT answer the phone unless I know the number. Another good thing is with Windows Phones you can block all incoming calls unless the caller is in your contact list. It' really puts a stop to those unwanted calls. I hope the persons scammed and police and get their money back.
