Raytown South defeats Battle

At the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic

Raytown South held off a late comeback to earn a 53-48 win against Battle in a loser's bracket semifinal game at the Joe Machens Great 8 Classic on Saturday at Fleming Fieldhouse.

Bryan Trimble scored 18 points and Jabril Cox added 10 to lead the Cardinals, who will take on Helias in the fifth-place game at 3 p.m. today.

Battle freshman Daviante Ostrander scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Spartans, who will face Jefferson City in the seventh-place game at 1:30 p.m.

Raytown South built an 11-point lead early in the third quarter, but the Spartans wouldn't go away without a fight. Battle went on a 12-3 run to make it a two-point game with 1:17 left in the period.

The Cardinals extended their lead to seven to open up the fourth quarter, but James Pittman helped cap off an 8-0 Battle run to give the Spartans a 43-42 lead with 3:03 left to play.

Jabril Cox responded by scoring six of the Cardinals' final 10 points in the game. The 6-foot-4 sophomore also sealed his teams' fate on a put back with 33 seconds left to give Raytown South a 51-46 lead.

Ostrander scored nine points in the first quarter to give the Spartans an 11-8 lead after the first period, but Raytown South controlled the tempo the rest of the way.

The Cardinals tied the game at 17 midway through the second quarter before ending the first half on a 13-5 run to take a 30-22 lead into the break.

Raytown South outscored the Spartans 22-11 in the second quarter and got back-to-back three-point plays from Demon Hyler and Elijah Childs to help spark the run.

The Cardinals were 20-of-44 and 11-of-18 from the free-throw line.

Battle, which committed 15 turnovers, was 17-of-47 from the field and 11-of-18 from the line.
