Jays tie for wrestling title in Kentucky

VERSAILLES, Ky. - Jacob Brune and Jalen Laughlin picked up individual titles Satuday as the Jefferson City Jays finished in a tie for the team title at the Woodford County Invitational.

Jefferson City and Woodford County (Ky.) Black each finished with 180.5 team points to top the 30-school field, Fern Creek (Ky.) was third with 176, while Gordon Lee (Ga.) with 172.5 and North Hardin (Ky.) with 166 points rounded out the top five team finishers.

"The kids did a wonderful job," Jefferson City coach Phil Cagle said.

Brune improved to 14-0 on the season with an 8-6 decision against Daniel Lannum of Danville (Ky.) in the title match at 132 pounds. At 160, Laughlin (13-1) won by fall against Josh Case of Eastern (Ky.) to take top honors.

Seven other Jays claimed top-six finishes in the tournament.

Corbin Howard at 120, Alex Bise at 138 and Ian Coil at 195 were all fourth in their respective weight classes. Devin Miller took fifth at 160, while Dennis Barnes at 106 and Christian Mayberry at 126 were both sixth.

Jefferson City, the lone Missouri school in the event, is back in action Jan. 8 against Rolla at Fleming Fieldhouse.
