Mid-Missouri braces for quarter-inch of ice

The potential for ice prompted the National Weather Service in St. Louis to issue a winter storm warning for Central Missouri on Saturday.

"It's not just the ice, but we're also going to have some really cold air coming in this weekend," said meteorologist Jon Carney.

The freezing drizzle/rain should start Saturday morning and by mid-day, Carney says, temperatures should reach above the freezing mark to make it all rain.

"You could see a quarter of an inch of ice from this," Carney said.

The second part of the storm comes Saturday night with arctic air bringing temperatures down to single digits.

"I don't think there's going to be much moisture with this," he said. "You might see about an inch of snow."

Carney said this is a typical storm for the area during this time of the year.

Larry Benz, Cole County public works director, said their crews were to come in around 1 a.m. to put down a layer of salt on roads before the wintry precipitation hits.

"Once it starts, we'll just monitor conditions," he said. "If it turns to all rain by midday, we'll send our folks home and then head back out for the evening. The temperatures are the key in this storm. It's touch and go one way or the other. A quarter-inch of ice would take trees and power lines down, and we don't need that."
