JC man sentenced in child-sex case

A Jefferson City man accused of having sexual intercourse with a child under the age of 14 has been sentenced to seven years in prison.

Craig Jones Jr., 23, of 1828 Mississippi St., was charged with committing the crime in October 2010.

He had faced a charge of first-degree statutory rape, but that was amended to first-degree endangering the welfare of a child.

According to a Jefferson City Police Department probable cause statement, the rape occurred in the 400 block of Dix Road.

In an interview with detectives, Jones confessed to committing the act, but stated he thought the victim was 17 years old and that it was consensual sex.

State law allows those 17 and older to make that decision, but those younger than 17 generally are considered too young to consent to sexual contact.
