Police identify man who may have jumped from bridge last week

Jefferson City police this morning said Randy C. Chugg, 21, is the man who may have jumped from the Missouri River bridge at Jefferson City last Thursday.

But, police said in a news release, they continue to investigate "the incident as a missing person case."

The news release noted officers were called at 4:43 p.m. Thursday and told that Chugg may have jumped from the bridge, even though the caller had not seen him jump.

"The investigation revealed that Chugg had been involved in an argument with his girlfriend and left his residence in the 1100 block of West McCarty Street on foot," police said today. "Prior to leaving, Chugg had indicated that he was going to jump off the bridge."

The girlfriend, who is not identified in the news release, "drove across the bridge and witnessed Chugg standing on the pedestrian walkway. When (she) parked at the Noren access and went to speak to him, she could not locate him."

But police found some of Chugg's personal items "on the pedestrian walkway near" the couple's "lock of love."

No one has heard from Chugg since last week, police said.

The Highway Patrol's Water Patrol division has said it will resume searching the Missouri River "when it is safe," the Jefferson City police reported.
