Wondering what to do with those old, worn out lights that are no longer suitable for hanging on that glamorous Christmas tree? Well, wonder no more.
You can now recycle the lights or any old extension cords at either Jefferson City Walmart now through Dec. 29. Collection bins are currently located at the entrances to both Jefferson City locations.
An assistant manager at the East Walmart said people should bundle the lights to keep them from getting too tangled.
A St. Louis-based company, St. Louis Green, has been hosting the recycling program since 2009. Since its inception, the campaign has recycled 194,000 pounds of holiday lights otherwise bound for landfills. Last year alone, 117,000 pounds were collected.
"Our goal this year goal is 136,000 pounds of lights diverted from local landfills," St. Louis Green founder Craig June said.
Once collected, the lights will be recycled and sent back to manufacturers to be used in new products. A portion of the drive proceeds go to a St. Louis area food bank.
