Talk about getting things off on the right foot.

Taking part in their first match on the first night of the Missouri Duals, the Jefferson City Jays found themselves deadlocked at 32 against Eureka.

It all came down to one match - the heavyweights - and the deciding bout didn't disappoint.

When the dust settled, Logan Coil emerged with a hard-fought 3-0 decision to send the Jays to a 35-32 victory.

"We knew Eureka was going to be a very tough match and it could have gone either way," Jefferson City coach Phil Cagle said. "There were some matches we thought we should have won and didn't, so our other kids had to step up and they really did a good job."

One of those that stepped up was Coil.

"Their heavyweight is like 8-2 and Logan is just 1-1, we've only had two matches, so Logan did a great job of keeping body position and doing what he did," Cagle said.

"What a great learning tool about life. Your family depends on you sometimes, and we've kind of got a wrestling family going, and he did a great job."

The opening win seemed to give the Jays some extra energy heading into their next dual, where they crushed Kirkwood by a 66-8 score.

"I think the kids were wanting to show something," Cagle said. "They weren't happy with the way they wrestled the first round. They wanted to come back and do something, and they did."

Five Jays ended up going 2-0 on the opening day. Corbin Howard (120 pounds) won by technical fall and won by fall, Jacob Brune (132) won by fall and won 9-0, Logan Moriarity (145) and Devin Miller (160) both won twice by fall, and Coil won his second match by forfeit.

"We're so happy with the way we wrestled. ... All of our kids wrestled hard," Cagle said.

They'll need to do more of that today, as duals await against Ozark, Hickman and Omaha (Neb.) Burke.

"Tomorrow just gets tougher," Cagle said. "Ozark's a good team and Omaha Burke is really looking tough right now. We're happy with tonight and tomorrow will be a new day and we'll see what happens."

Cagle added the Jays are glad to be getting in some matches in spite of the winter weather that hit town Friday.

"We're tired of beating up on each other in the room," he said. "This gives the kids some goals and we'll get through this weekend and get some things accomplished and get done what we can to get better."
