Your Opinion: Sobriety checkpoints curb drunk driving

Dear Editor:

I know it (a sobriety checkpoint) is inconvenient and time consuming when you are trying to get home after a hard shift at work or overtime. However, think about what these stops are doing. They are designed to catch people who habitually drive while drunk. The costs of families that have someone killed by someone who has been drinking I think outweighs Mr. Honse's costs.

If it hadn't been for a Highway Patrolman and some other caring people I am sure I would have killed myself during my drinking days or worse someone else. I am so grateful for the departments that come together for these stops. Many are working overtime and sacrificing their family time.

Try to put yourself in the shoes of families like Don Edwards who was needlessly taken from his family by a persistent offender of the DWI rules.

Also you didn't mention why you were stopped late at night when asked "why out so late?' Except for designed checkpoints an officer has to have probable cause to detain or stop you.
