Helias leads area teams in first football poll

It should come as no surprise.

With a strong nucleus back from last season’s state runner-up squad, Helias leads seven area teams in the preseason state football media poll with a No. 2 ranking in Class 4. The Crusaders’ 134 points sit behind juggernaut Webb City, which garnered all 15 first-place votes.

The Jefferson City Jays come in at No. 10 in the Class 6 poll with 20 points. Defending champion Blue Springs received all 15 first-place votes.

Blair Oaks, coming off a runner-up finish in 2012, sits in the No. 9 spot in Class 2 heading into the season with 227 points. The team the Falcons lost to in the state championship, Lamar, sit atop the rankings with all 15 first-place votes.

The California Pintos begin 2013 where they left off in 2012 in the No. 3 spot in Class 3 with 116 votes. Continuing the theme, defending champion Maryville earned every first-place vote.

Tipton, a state semifinalist last season, holds the No. 4 spot in Class 1 with 101 points. Hamilton, the defending champion, earned nine first-place votes to take the No. 1 spot with 144 points. Valle Catholic, last year’s runner-up, received six first-place votes and sits just behind with 141 points.
