Your Opinion: Priest's actions teach lessons

Dear Editor:

Perhaps it really is true that "all the darkness in the world cannot extinguish the light of a single candle." The world has been captivated by the story of Fr. Patrick Dowling's ministry to seriously injured accident victim, Katie Lentz. Sometimes, a single simple act can be more powerful than countless Sunday-morning sermons.

In a world, increasingly politically and religiously divisive, we were taught that we are all children of the same God. Especially, when death may be eminent, it really doesn't matter how much we hate the Democrats or the Republicans, or anyone else we may single out as the hated "Other."

In an interview. Fr. Dowling reportedly stated that he did not come forward sooner because he is too busy to be immersed in the media. Judging from some of the venom-laced Letters to the Editor, perhaps we would all be better off if we turned off the 24-hour hate speech and concentrated on finding common ground.

Thank you Fr. Dowling for teaching us what it means to be a "mensch"; that humility, Christ-oriented, human kindness and decency still exist - and actually matter.

That is the true miracle.
