LU waiving application fee for displaced workers

Lincoln University is waiving the student application fee for workers, and their dependents, who will be displaced by the upcoming closure of the RR Donnelley plant in Jefferson City.

The waiver of the $20 application fee will apply to the fall 2013 and spring 2014 semesters, said LU President Dr. Kevin Rome.

"It is important that each organization within this community find a way to be of assistance to these families during this difficult time," he said in a press release. "Lincoln University welcomes the employees of RR Donnelley as they look to begin a new chapter in their lives."

Lincoln University's Department of Student Financial Aid will provide guidance to those seeking monetary assistance in covering the cost of an education.

There are several federal, state and private grant and scholarship options for which the displaced workers might qualify, and the university's student financial aid department is poised to help. The first step in seeking financial assistance is for prospective students to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

Even though the school year begins Monday, there is still time for new students to enroll for the upcoming semester, Rome said.

"We do offer eight-week sessions, with the second session beginning Monday, Oct. 21," he said. "We understand that with the suddenness of the announcement and the influx of information being presented, starting classes next week might not be a viable option. We want the workers of RR Donnelley to understand that the door is always open at Lincoln University."
