NEW YORK (AP) - Andy Pettitte pitched six effective innings, Curtis Granderson homered, and the New York Yankees beat Toronto 5-3 on Thursday after a 3 1/2-hour rain delay for their 10th straight victory against the Blue Jays.
Eduardo Nunez hit a two-run single, and the surging Yankees won their fifth consecutive game and 10th in 12 overall. New York improved to 12-1 against Toronto this season with its second four-game sweep of the Blue Jays, and moved within 3 1/2 games of the second AL wild-card spot.
The Yankees have won 13 home games in a row against Toronto, their longest streak against one team since a 14-game run against Kansas City from August 2002 to April 2006.
The last-place Blue Jays have lost five straight and 11 of 15.
Pettitte (9-9) won his second consecutive start after going 0-3 in his previous five. His only blemish was J.P. Arencibia's leadoff homer in the fifth. With his 254th victory, the 41-year-old lefty tied Jack Morris and Hall of Famer Red Faber for 42nd place on the career list.
J.A. Happ (3-3) took the loss.
TWINS 7, TIGERS 6
DETROIT (AP) - Chris Herrmann's second RBI double of the game broke an eighth-inning tie and helped Minnesota edge Detroit.
With two out, Herrmann lined a ball into the right-center field gap. Center fielder Austin Jackson got a bad break on the ball, and just missed while attempting a shoestring catch. Doug Bernier scored from second to give the Twins the lead.
Jared Burton pitched a scoreless eighth, and Glen Perkins got through the middle of the Tigers order in the ninth for his 30th save in 33 chances.
Casey Fien (3-2) earned the win. Bruce Rondon (1-2) took the loss.
Detroit trailed 6-2 going into the bottom of the sixth, but rallied to tie it on Jackson's three-run homer. That allowed Justin Verlander to extend his unbeaten streak against the Twins to 11 starts, despite allowing six runs and 10 hits in seven innings.
WHITE SOX 4, ROYALS 3, 12 INNINGS
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) - Conor Gillaspie homered leading off the 12th inning, leading the Chicago White Sox to their first three-game sweep in Kansas City since 2009.
Gillaspie drove the second pitch he got from Luke Hochevar (3-2) just over the outstretched glove of right fielder Justin Maxwell for his 11th homer.
The tiebreaking shot came after Jacob Petricka made his major league debut in the 11th inning for the White Sox, inheriting runners on first and second with nobody out. Petricka (1-0) calmly got Salvador Perez to ground into a double play to end the inning.
Addison Reed preserved Chicago's sixth straight win when the he left the tying run on second base for his 34th save.
It was the fifth straight loss for Kansas City, and the eighth in 10 games overall.
