SEATTLE (AP) - Obafemi Martins and Eddie Johnson scored first-half goals while the home fans were still buzzing about the arrival of Clint Dempsey and the Seattle Sounders beat FC Dallas 3-0 on Saturday night.
After two days of speculation, Dempsey was unveiled as the newest Sounders star during a pregame ceremony. Then his new club went out and ran its unbeaten streak at home to nine straight games, the longest in franchise history.
Dempsey's transfer from Tottenham Hotspur to Seattle was made official when he unzipped his sweatshirt to reveal his new rave green jersey just before kickoff.
That set off a celebration that continued with early goals from Martins and Johnson. The addition of Dempsey should only make Seattle's offense more potent.
RED BULLS 3, SPORTING KANSAS CITY 2
KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) - Lloyd Sam had a goal and an assist after coming in as a second-half substitute, and New York took over first place in the Eastern Conference.
Sam, who entered in the 60th minute with the score tied at 1, assisted on Fabian Espindola's go-ahead goal in the 63rd minute and then made it 3-1 in the 69th with a counterattack goal.
Steele also had a goal and an assist for the Red Bulls (11-7-5), who extended their unbeaten streak to four and moved two points ahead of Kansas City (10-7-6) in the East.
Kei Kamara had a goal and an assist for Sporting K.C.
Dom Dwyer's first MLS goal in the second minute of second-half stoppage time, pulled Sporting to 3-2.
D.C. UNITED 3, IMPACT 1
WASHINGTON (AP) - Conor Doyle and Jared Jeffrey each scored their first professional goals to lead D.C. United.
Doyle also set up Jeffrey's stoppage-time score in the pair's second match each for their new club.
Luis Silva also scored for United (3-15-4), who snapped a five-game winless streak and scored three goals for the first time this season.
Jed Brovsky scored his first career goal for the Impact (10-6-5), who wasted a chance to move into second place in the Eastern Conference with a victory over the last-place United.
FIRE 2, UNION 1
CHESTER, Pa. (AP) - Mike Magee scored his league-leading 14th goal in the 75th minute to lift Chicago past Philadelphia.
Patrick Nyarko also added a goal and an assist for the Fire (8-9-4). Magee scored a goal in his third straight game and has eight goals in 10 games since coming to Chicago from the L.A. Galaxy.
The Union (9-7-7) snapped a three-game unbeaten string (2-0-1) and fell to 5-3-4 at home.
Nyarko's goal in the ninth minute gave the Fire a 1-0 lead.
Sheanon Williams tied the game at 1 in the 60th minute when he finished a cross off a free kick by Sebastien Le Toux. It was Le Toux's league-best 10th assist.
DYNAMO 3, CREW 1
HOUSTON (AP) - Brad Davis, Will Bruin and Cam Weaver scored and Houston extended its unbeaten streak to four games.
Davis put the Dynamo (9-6-6) ahead 1-0 in the 10th minute converting the penalty kick inside the near post.
Houston earned the penalty kick when Giles Barnes had a short breakaway in the box before being taken down from behind by Chad Marshall, who was given a yellow card.
Bruin extended the lead to 2-0 in the 31st minute, taking an Oscar Boniek Garcia pass at the top of the box and sending a right-footed shot inside the near post.
Columbus (6-11-5) cut the lead to 2-1 on an own goal by Houston's Kofi Sarkodie in the 75th minute.
RAPIDS 2, REAL SALT LAKE 2
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (AP) - Jaime Castrillon scored the tying goal in the 70th minute and Colorado extended its unbeaten streak to seven games.
Castrillon's goal off a header was his first of the season. Deshorn Brown added a goal for Colorado (9-7-8). The Rapids are 4-0-3 in their past seven games after a 0-4-1 stretch.
Alvero Saborio and Ned Grabavoy scored goals for Real Salt Lake (11-7-5).
Colorado midfielder Atiba Harris left in the first half with a right quad injury. The Rapids were already without Hendry Thomas, who served the first of a two-game suspension after receiving a second yellow card in last week's game with Los Angeles.
The game was halted for an hour and two minutes in the first half due to lightening in the area. Several downpours of rain made for difficult field conditions.
EARTHQUAKES 2, CHIVAS USA 0
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) - Chris Wondolowski scored twice in his return from playing on the U.S. national team, breaking a nearly three-month league drought and leading San Jose to the win.
Wondolowski headed home a ball to the upper reaches of the far corner in the 45th minute for his first league goal since May 8.
The reigning league MVP, who scored five times during the United States' victorious Gold Cup run, followed that up by pouncing on a loose rebound in the 87th minute.
San Jose (8-9-6) extended its winning streak to three matches to edge back into the Western Conference playoff race. The Quakes are unbeaten in 11 home matches.
Chivas USA (4-13-5) is winless in its past 10 road games.
TIMBERS 1, WHITECAPS 1
PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) - Jordan Harvey scored the tying goal in the 68th minute, lifting Vancouver to a draw with Portland.
The result pulls the Whitecaps ahead in the three-way Cascadia Cup rivalry series with the Timbers and the Seattle Sounders.
The Timbers (8-3-11) remained tied for second place in the Western Conference.
The Whitecaps (9-7-6) pulled into a tie for fourth in the West.
After a scoreless first half, Ryan Johnson put the Timbers in front with a header into the net in the 48th minute.
The Cascadia Cup - at least the trophy itself - was introduced in 2004 when all three teams were part of the United Soccer Leagues First Division.
