Boone County prosecutors on Friday charged a Columbia man, who is believed to have fired the shot that killed Anthony Unger, Jefferson City, in June.

Domionte S. Cheatum, 20, Columbia, was being held in the Boone County Jail on a $1 million, cash-only bond, after being charged with second-degree murder, first-degree robbery and armed criminal action for the June 23 killing in a Columbia parking lot.

Columbia police said, in a news release, that Cheatum was arrested while being held in the jail on an unrelated warrant.

Samuel Butler, 26, Holts Summit, and Joycelynn Brown, 22, Jefferson City, were charged earlier with second-degree murder in the case.

Unger, 25, was found in a car on a Conley Road parking lot, near the Hy-Vee store and south of Sam’s Club, with multiple gunshot wounds.

Police said the shooting occurred about 11:10 p.m.

Unger later died from his injuries.

Authorities believe the shooting was drug-related.

Brown told authorities she gave Unger a ride from Jefferson City to Columbia, where he looked to sell a half-pound of marijuana for $1,400.

They met Butler in Columbia.

Eventually Brown, Butler and Unger followed two males in another car — one believed to be Cheatum — to a Conley Road parking lot.

Brown told police last month that Unger got out of her car, retrieved the package of marijuana from under the hood of the car, then got back into the car and showed Cheatum the marijuana.

Brown said Cheatum then got into the car with Unger, and displayed a handgun — telling Unger, “I need you to give it to me.”

Brown said when she saw the gun and heard the demand, she got out of the car and ran away.

Brown said she heard several shots as she ran.

After seeing the car with Cheatum and another male drive off, she returned to find Unger bleeding and unresponsive, she reported.
