Lincoln University raising some fees

Lincoln University students who come to Jefferson City from another state will see tuition increases this fall, but Missouri residents’ undergraduate tuition is staying the same, at $205 for each credit hour.

The out-of-state, undergraduate student rate will be $418 a credit hour, a $13 increase.

In-state graduate students will pay $285 for each credit hour — up $19 from today’s rates. But out-of-state graduate students will pay $530 for each hour, up $25.

Off-campus course fees at Fort Leonard Wood and in Caruthersville also are climbing slightly, while most program fees stay the same.

But the school’s Building Maintenance fee is almost tripling — from $36 this year to $92.70 — for all students.

LU Interim President Connie Hamacher noted state law restricts colleges’ and universities’ ability to increase tuition.

“We had to stay within the 1.7 percent,” she explained.

The five curators attending Thursday’s meeting also approved a return to the “Neighboring States Program,” which grants in-state tuition rates to some students from surrounding states.

“It is apparent that over 50 percent of our out-of-state students come from a state that borders Missouri — Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Tennessee,” Interim Provost Jerome Offord Jr. wrote in a memo.

Curators originally approved the program in 2009 but dropped it in January 2012.

“The research showed that we were losing students from those states so, by reinstating it, we believe we will attract more students,” Hamacher said. “Furthermore, the requirements say they have to live in our residential halls so filling those halls are going to increase our revenues, also.”

Thursday’s meeting likely was Hamacher’s last as interim president.

When LU’s curators hold their next regular meeting, in June, new President Kevin Rome will have started work as Lincoln’s 19th president.
