NORTHWOODS, Mo. (AP) — An 8-month-old girl was killed and her mother badly injured when a driver hit a bus stop in at St. Louis suburb.
The Missouri Highway Patrol said the driver appeared to have had a medical problem before losing control of his car and hitting the bus stop about 11 a.m. Monday in Northwoods.
The car struck 39-year-old Erica Hughes and her daughter, Alyja H. Hughes, who was in a stroller while they waited at the bus stop. Erica Hughes and the driver, 41-year-old Larry Jones of St. Louis, were hospitalized with serious injuries.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reported (http://bit.ly/XDYK5q ) that the driver’s niece said he is diabetic and may have had a seizure while driving to a dialysis treatment.
Jones’ Buick Century was going east but crossed westbound traffic before striking the mother and daughter, who were in front of the Love Discount Store. The car hit a mailbox and a sign before flipping over, ending up back on its tires by the time it stopped.
David Smith, 35, who lives nearby, performed CPR on the girl until paramedics arrived, and helped tend to Erica Hughes. Smith said he is a former volunteer firefighter and was training to become an emergency medical technician.
Jones’ niece, Erica Betts, also lives nearby and went to the scene after hearing sirens and receiving a call from her grandmother, who saw the accident.
“When I saw his car, I couldn’t believe it,” Betts said. “I’m so sorry about the woman and her child, and I’m just so worried about my uncle.”
