Your Opinion: Base opinion on logic, not "straw man' motif

Dear Editor:

Unfortunately, reasoned debate on issues is becoming scarcer in the public arena. Those who have an interest in picking up this dying art should take note of Nelson Otto's letter to the editor on the debate on defending marriage. Otto uses the classic logical fallacy of the "straw man" by constructing a gross caricature of defenders of traditional marriage and then knocking down the straw man with a flourish.

Proponents of changing our marriage laws do so by draining the word marriage of its meaning, and then pouring their own ideas into it. The fact is that marriage is, and always has been, a foundation upon which stable societies have been built from time immemorial. Erosion of that foundation leads to the decline of those same societies.

I would ask Otto, and those of similar opinion to argue the issue based on logic and facts and not be demonizing and marginalizing their opponents.
