BizBeat: Drive-thru liquor store to open in Jefferson City

With convenience climbing to the top of our list, it's no wonder we conduct so much business without ever leaving our vehicle.

Drive-thru banks, drive-thru dinner, and now, drive-thru liquor. No, there won't be any pop-topping, but customers can order on the spot or call ahead to get their favorite beverages. Xpress Liquor & Smokes store will be open for walk-ins as well, but a drive-thru just adds an extra avenue of service.

Operations manager Jay Patel said the family owned-business also operates similar locations in Fulton, Mexico, Troy and Kirksville. The liquor store will offer all the makings of a good time - fine wines, spirits, beers, including kraft beers, as well as smokes, premium cigars, mixers, chips and soda.

The new store will be opened at 510 Ellis Blvd., formerly Southern Comfort Bar. Patel said his store will be the first like it in Jefferson City.

"Geographically, it was the right fit, and it had the drivethru already," Patel noted.

The company will renovate the inside as well as replace the drive-thru window. Work is scheduled to begin immediately with an expected grand opening the second week of June.

"We don't shoot for any particular client, all customers are welcome in our store," Patel said. "We are not a typical drive-thru store. We add that for customer convenience. It will be very nice, with attractive prices and friendly people."

In a Board of Adjustment meeting held last week, Patel said his stores usually operate between 8 a.m.-10 p.m. on weekdays, and from 8 a.m.-11 p.m. on Friday and Saturdays. The retail package liquor store was approved for a conditional use permit in a unanimous vote.
