BERLIN (AP) — A knife-wielding man entered a German day care facility for children and took its director hostage before police freed the captive hours later.
Friday’s standoff didn’t involve any children at the facility in a Cologne suburb. Seventeen children and their supervisor were there when it started but quickly left the building.
The intruder held the facility’s 51-year-old director, demanding cash and a getaway car. After about 10 hours, officers moved in, overwhelmed the intruder and freed the director.
Police said the hostage-taker was wounded in the operation and the victim also was being treated for injuries. They did not identify the intruder and said his motives are still under investigation.
