Gov. orders flags at half-staff for MoDOT worker

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Gov. Jay Nixon has ordered that all U.S. and Missouri flags be flown at half-staff Saturday at government buildings in Jackson County to honor a state transportation worker who died on the job.

Fifty-year-old Clifton J. Scott of Kansas City died Sept. 21 while helping law enforcement officers reroute traffic around an accident on Interstate 70 in Independence.

Scott's funeral is scheduled for Saturday. The Missouri Department of Transportation worker was honored days before his death for 15 years of service with the department.

Thirty-five-year-old David Murdick of Blue Springs has been charged with first-degree involuntary manslaughter in Scott's death. Prosecutors allege Murdick drove through cones and flares and hit Scott. Murdick then hit Scott's truck, causing it to burst into flames.
