Although they knew the music quite well, on Thursday the tempo wasn’t quite right. “Whoa! It keeps getting slower,” said Mike Sestak, the school’s music program percussion teacher, and with a quick stab of his right hand, the pace picked up.

Next, the cymbal crashes weren’t quite perfect — Sestak heard only two, instead of the ....

I hate to say your wrong but, this article is incorrect. They hit the number 14 this year. And it was not consecutive. While they have a great following and are to be respected for their accomplishments we need to get our facts correct. They have won this year making it their 14th win for Mike but, it has not been all in a row. This group practices everyday and still gets better each time. I enjoy hearing them and watching them preform. They have done something that most wish they could do but haven't. If it weren't for Mike's professionalism and dedication that helps push these young men and women to be better . So I thank you for doing what you do and showing them that sticking with something really does matter in the long run.

offroader is correct on this! I have 2 daughters who have both been a part of the JCHS marching band. One who graduated in 2009 and my youngest (a junior) who has been on the drumline for the past 3 years. Our JCHC drumline was on a 9 year winning streak when they went to Mozingo during the 2008-2009 school year. Certain "people" didn't like that we could have become a 10 year consecutive winner that particular year and would have liked to have us not compete at all. Needless to say, we took 2nd that year, even though there was no doubt that JC should have taken 1st. In any event, we went back the next year and have won each year since then! I have watched every JC drumline performance for the past 6 years and have witnessed many practices...people have NO IDEA how hard these kids work and just how serious they are about what they do! Practice every school day morning at 7:00 a.m., they then attend school all day and go back for practice in the evenings! They play at every home football game, march in both holiday parades and attend 5-6 marching competitions in the fall. When they arrive at competitions you will hear the other schools kids whisper "oh great, Jeff City is here". Mike has taught these kids very well! Not only about playing the instruments, but what it means to be on a team and be responsible! For that, as a parent, I thank him! If you haven't had the "pleasure" of hearing the drumline...you're missing out!!
