Mo. woman pleads to serving alcohol to teen
Friday, September 14, 2012
KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — A western Missouri woman has been sentenced to two years of probation for serving alcohol to an underage party guest who was later involved in a fatal car wreck.
Jackson County prosecutors initially charged 47-year-old Sandra Triebel with involuntary manslaughter. They hoped to hold her responsible for the drunken-driving death caused by a 19-year-old guest at her 2009 Halloween party.
But a judge dismissed that charge under Missouri law, and The Kansas City Star reports (http://bit.ly/SiBnHA ) Triebel pleaded guilty Thursday to misdemeanor alcohol-related charges.
Besides serving probation, Triebel must also perform 40 hours of community service and attend a victim impact panel.
The drunken party guest, Kenneth Blake, is serving a six-year sentence for the crash that killed 16-year-old Laura Reynolds.

?????? Probation for suplying alcohol to an underage person who later drove drunk, got in a car accident and killed a 16yr old? I'm not asking for much, but "your honor" please at least explain the rationality behind that decision?
I can see the 19yr old getting a break...., but not 47 yr old Sandra Triebel. Ms. Triebel is surley old enough to have already experienced what the consequnces of drinking and driving can cause. I'm sure she's lost a few of her classmates, friend's and relatives. I'm sure she's driven up on enough alcohol related accident scenes. So she knows full well....not to serve alcohol to underage drinker's and especially don't serve alcohol to underage drinker's and let them drive. Involuntary manslaughter is an apprppriate charge...nothing less
What responsible 47 year old hold's a Halloween Party where 19 yr olds are allowed to hang out...Cougar prowlling is one thing, but the big cat has got to know the limitations and accept responsibility for what happens.

The judge cited the law. He/she may or may not have been right. If the judge was right, it is up to the Legislature to change the law. Age should be no reason to "cut someone a break." A crime is a crime, no matter how old the person who did the crime. the real killer did get prison time. Missouri has 508 people in prison for every 100,000 residents, ranking 9th in the nation, according to the U.S. Justice Department. That costs all of us money and taxpayers have to be willing to spend the money. Perhaps we should use other punishments other than prison for some crimes. Thousands of hours of community service, rather than a few, might be more appropriate for some crimes we now jail people for. The Legislature is looking at the criminal code. Maybe it can come up with more cost effective punishments as well as punishments that work.
