Jefferson City welcomes fans with Friday rally

The first SEC-JC Pep Rally is set for Friday, celebrating the first Southeastern Conference home game for the University of Missouri.

Jill Snodgrass, who partnered with the Jefferson City Convention and Visitors Bureau to organize the pep rally, said Friday will be Jefferson City’s way of getting people geared up for Saturday's MU game against Georgia.

The event, which runs from 5-9 p.m. downtown, will feature a temporary open container district, allowing patrons to purchase an over 21 wristband and event cup. It also will feature musicians, street performers and other entertainers along High Street.

The actual pep rally from 6-6:30 p.m. will feature speakers from the community, MU and Lincoln University. Participating local hotels, which are seeing increased occupancy for the weekend, will offer transportation for people to get to the event.

So the music, dancing, home-team rah rah, seeing friends, good weather outdoors, the general air of fun . . . all are invisible to you, but you can see the beer cups in a clear lite. Now don't get me wrong, there'll be hangovers, barf in the gutters, a fight or two, and a few bruised spouses due to alcohol abuse that, and every, evening. There are very old and strong arguments that a life muddied by any substance is less a life than a clean pure spiritual life. There are those in some systems of thought that say ANY distraction from maximum focus on the meaning and direction of life and creation are unacceptable. Most of us don't buy that approach. Alcohol is a thousands of years old part of human society, but only a part. If drinking is all you see, I'm sorry. Friday will be a blast, for many many reasons, including the relaxation and social lubrication of moderate alcohol use. If we're a city of drunks, then we're a species of drunks. Islam and the Baptists fight this while The most of the Christian churches swill away. Go figure.

I don't give a rat's behind about the alcohol or people drinking it in private. What I do care about is public money and facilities being used to get folks drunk, and then public money and facilities are being used to clean up the carnage from the drunks going home or going somewhere with someone else's spouse to hook up.

Also, the long-held perception of Jefferson City is that there is nothing to do around here besides gettting drunk, and then our city leaders make a juge deal out of public drinking and calling all sorts of attention to it by awarding special cups, special armbands, special drinking districts, drinking festivals, drinking permits, etc. If they want to allow drinking, then quietly allow it, don't make all the noise and fuss and special events and special props about drinking and getting drunk. Don't make such a huge deal and focus on the drinking.

Might as allow marijuana too. It is much less harmful than alcohol.

This is all so hypercritical of our leaders.

Thanks for your post asb. My wife and I will be downtown along with our young son for the festivities. I'm especially looking forward to the LU drumline I've heard will be there as they always put on a great show. Saturday morning I'll get up and exercise before doing some yardwork and then watch the Mizzou game in the evening. Sunday we'll get up and go to church followed by a nice family breakfast. But first comes Friday night and my wife and I (along with a handful of other similar families) will have a beer or two downtown while enjoying the festivities so many people have worked hard to make available to us.
If that lifestyle offends anyone you have my apologies for being the scourge of society you wish to erradicate. Hopefully you'll switch your focus to the big picture and stop being such terds about drinking in public.

Lots to do this weekend! There's Thursday Night Live, SEC Pep Rally, the library's cultural concert on the south capitol lawn, Taste of Missouri, Capital Jazzfest/Street Art Fair, and the Cole County Extension Fall Festival. Hopefully, the folks visiting from Georgia will enjoy their time here and spend some money!
